Shape Run 2011


, the sixth edition of Singapore's first women-only running race, concluded successfully on July 24 at Nicoll Highway.
Organised by Shape Singapore, a publication licensed under American Media Inc. and published by SPH Magazines Pte Ltd (SPH Magazines), the challenge offered distance categories of 5km and 10km.
A total of 8,000 female runners – most clad in the blue Reebok Shape Run tee – participated in the event.
Associate Professor Fatimah Lateef, MP for Marine Parade GRC, graced the occasion as the Guest-of-Honour and flagged off the run at 7.10am.
Completing the 10km race in 34 min 18 seconds, Eunice Muchiri topped her category by coming in more than a minute ahead of her nearest rival.
The 18-year-old Kenyan clinched the $1,000 cash prize along with $5,000 worth of products and services.
Eunice said of her win: "I came to Singapore for this race, and I'm very happy to have won."
The 8,000-strong turnout was split evenly between the 10km and 5km challenge. Participation in the 10km category was higher this year, compared to 44 per cent in 2010.
The 5km course wound along Mountbatten Road, Geylang Road, Kampong Bugis and Crawford Street.
Runners in the 10km challenge included the 5km route plus a scenic loop around the F1 Pit Building, Singapore Flyer and Marina Promenade Park. Both routes finished at Nicoll Highway.
Finishing first in the 5km race was Jenny Lundgren, 33, who clocked an impressive timing of 18 min 02 seconds.
The champion bagged $500 in cash as well as products and services worth $5,000.
Jenny said: "The run has been a very positive experience. All-women events like this give female runners the confidence to compete. I'm surprised and happy to have won this high-profile race."
In the Corporate category, the team from Barclays Race to Win – comprising April Mckenna, Amy Mignosi and Syndie Blake – scored the top prize of $1,000 cash as well as products and services valued at $3,000.
The tally of their members' top three timings was the lowest among the corporate teams.
The elated team said: "Shape Run was very exciting. We're definitely coming back next year."
Upon completing the run, participants were treated to sports massages, drinks and refreshments, as well as opportunities to sample various merchandise presented at the race site.
Each finisher took home a Runner's Kit – a Shape sports bag filled with beauty and health products and vouchers, nutritious snacks, spa vouchers, fitness trial passes and many other freebies.
